'Here is a valuable military force prepared to aid in the defence of the country...Our Artist's Sketches, though of a gently humorous and playful character, illustrate the ordinary personal experiences of Volunteers in a marching column which is two or three days on the road from London to the south coast...The horrors of war do not yet appear; but there will be a few "casualties," a sprained ankle now and then, which the ambulance men have skill to deal with: one may catch cold in the first week of an English April'.
