Regatta at Zanzibar - sailing pinnace race: rounding H.M.S. Brisk, 1890. 'During the recent dispute with Portugal concerning the territorial dominion on the Zambesi and Shiré Rivers, a combined British naval squadron of her Majesty's ships belonging to the East India, Cape of Good Hope, and West Coast of Africa stations, with H.M.S. Calliope and H.M.S. Satellite, on their way home, and H.M.S. Conquest...was sent on special service to cruise in the Mozambique Channel, under command of Rear-Admiral Sir E. Fremantle who hoisted his flag on board H.M.S. Boadicea...Zanzibar being the rendezvous of the fleet, a regatta was held for the amusement of the officers and crews. The first day was devoted to sailing matches, beginning with a race for the pinnaces of the ships, which was won by that of H.M.S. Raleigh, taking the first prize. The sailing race for galleys followed, and the first prize was won by the Satellite's galley. They had to sail round H.M.S. Brisk, moored in the roadstead. In the rowing matches, next day, the prize for twelve-oar cutters was won by the crew of H.M.S. Satellite. The crew of H.M.S. Calliope won several races; and that ship displayed her Australian motto, with due colonial pride, in escorting one of her victorious boats'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
