The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1887 to 1889, led by explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley, was one of the last major European expeditions into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century. Its goal was ostensibly the relief of Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), besieged Egyptian governor of Equatoria (part of modern-day South Sudan), who was threatened by Mahdist forces. Here Stanley and the Pasha are waited on by an African, while through the tent flaps others can be seen carrying crates of United Kingdom Tea. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
