As You Like It, at the St. James's Theatre, 1890. London stage production. 'Adam (Mr. Fred. Everill); Celia (Miss Amy McNeil); Mrs. Langtry as Rosalind; Phebe (Miss Beatrice Lamb); Silvius (Mr. Matthew Brodie); Audrey (Miss Marion Lea); Touchstone (Mr. Charles Sugden)...opening night of...Shakspeare's delightful woodland comedy...the charming forest scenes [were] enacted in a poetic glade beautifully painted by Mr. Bruce Smith. Rather overdone was Rosalind's distressful emotion while anxiously watching slender Orlando's wrestling bout...But, once banished with the faithful Celia to the Forest of Arden, Rosalind, in becoming hose and doublet, was in her element, and fairly captivated one and all. Renowned for the beauty of her face and figure, both in the New World and in the Old, Mrs. Langtry made a most fascinating picture in her woodland guise: and the results of her patient study and constant practice on the American and English stage were seen in a marked improvement of her style of acting...Mrs. Langtry was most attractive from first to last; and Rosalind thoroughly merited the prolonged plaudits which greeted her at the close of her expressive delivery of the epilogue...the tasteful costumes were designed by the Hon. Lewis Wingfield'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
