French Revolution: Louis XVI drinking to the health of the nation, Paris, 1876. On 20 June 1792 the crowd attacked the Tuileries Palace, where King Louis XVI (1754-1793) was taking refuge. The mob forced the monarch to appear on the balcony, putting on Phrygian cap and drink to the health of the people, to which he agreed. From "History of the French Revolution", Vol I, 1876.
