Napoleon on the 18th Brumaire in the Council of Five Hundred, the chamber of legislative power during the Directory, Coup d'état of 18 Brumaire (9 November 1799), 1879. It ended the Directory (1795-1798) to make way for the Consulate, with Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) as leader. From "History of the French Revolution" Volume I, 2nd part, 1879.
