General view of the island of Corfu, 1879. The Republic of Venice ruled until 1797, when, by the Treaty of Campo Formio (17 October 1797), Corfu came under French sovereignty under Napoleon I. In 1814 the British expelled the French troops. By the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Corfu and the rest of the Ionian Islands came under British rule.
