The Dispute with Portugal: popular manifestation in the Place Dom Pedro, Lisbon, Jan. 14, 1890. 'It is much to be regretted that the vulgar and unreflecting part of the Lisbon populace should have been excited by the clamour of a faction hostile to the Royal Government of Portugal to indulge in silly and spiteful demonstrations against England, on account of the recent submission of the Portuguese Government...in the dispute concerning the Zambesi territories...Portuguese political parties have endeavoured to turn this affair...to their own interest, by appealing to a vague sentiment of patriotism and exalting the...glory of their nation in the first discovery and settlement of the African coasts, while they do not care to remind their countrymen how Portugal was delivered from French domination by the valour of the British army, and the victories of Wellington, in the Peninsular War. The tumultuous procession...was led by a small number of hot-headed young men...but, soon after midnight, they were dispersed by the police, and nearly seventy were arrested. The Government promptly expressed its regret for the insults offered to England, and ordered the replacement of the...Royal arms which had been torn down from the British Consulate'.
