Lord Lonsdale's Travels in North America: forks of the Peace and Smoky Rivers, 1890. 'The enterprising and courageous performance of the Earl of Lonsdale in travelling northward, from the Saskatchewan River of the Great Western Territory of Canada to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, and thence crossing Alaska westward to the North Pacific...has excited much attention... There is...much reason to hope that large portions of the western country, between the Upper North Saskatchewan, the Athabasca, and the Peace Rivers lying towards the Rocky Mountains, where the climate is far milder than it is in the same latitude on the eastern side, will be found suitable for agricultural occupation. The soil is exceedingly rich; grain has actually been grown in abundant crops, and there is ample pasture land'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
