The late Right Rev. Joseph Barber Lightfoot. D.D., Bishop of Durham, 1890. 'The death of this eminent prelate, one of the most learned New Testament Greek scholars and theologians in the Church of England, took place on Dec. 19. Joseph Barber Light foot. D.D., born at Liverpool in 1828, was educated under Dr. Prince Lee, head master of King Edward's School, Birmingham, afterwards Bishop of Manchester, by whom he was ordained in 1854. Mr. Lightfoot passed to Trinity College, Cambridge, and obtained the highest honours with his degree...His subsequent life was for many years mainly devoted to the University to which he was attached. He became Fellow of Trinity in 1852, and tutor. In 1861 he became Hulsean Professor of Divinity, and in 1875 Margaret Professor. He combined with these University offices various important duties; becoming chaplain to the late Prince Consort in 1801, chaplain to the Queen in 1862, and Deputy Clerk of the Closet in 1875, and examining chaplain to Dr. Tait, both as Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury, from 1862-79. In 1871 he was appointed Canon Residentiary at St. Paul's Cathedral...In 1879 he was made Bishop of Durham'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
