Chapel of the Invention of the Cross, Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, by W. Simpson: Exhibition of the Institute of Painters in Oil Colours, 1883. 'A few of the sketches, furnished by the artists themselves, which are given in the Illustrated Catalogue of this Exhibition, appeared in our paper last week. Those now presented to our readers include Mr. W. Simpson's interior of the "Chapel of the Invention of the Cross." The last-mentioned, we may observe, is a celebrated shrine at Jerusalem, adjacent to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and is supposed to be the precise site where the Empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, discovered the remains of the identical cross upon which our Saviour died. The supposed seat of the Empress is shown to the right; and through the opening above are seen the pillars of the Byzantine Church of St. Helena'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883.
