The Right Rev. Dr. Alfred Barry, Bishop of Sydney, New South Wales, 1883. 'Dr. Alfred Barry, who has been appointed Bishop of Sydney, Metropolitan of New South Wales, and Primate of Australia, is a son of the late Sir Charles Barry, the architect oi the Houses of Parliament at Westminster...He was ordained deacon by Dr. Turton, Bishop of Ely, in 1850, and admitted into priest's orders by the Bishop of Oxford in 1853. From 1850 till 1854 he was Sub-Warden of Trinity College, Glenalmond, and he held the head-mastership of the Grammar School at Leeds from the latter date till 1882, when he was appointed Principal of Cheltenham College, which position he held till 1868, when he was elected to the post of Principal at King s College, Loudon. Dr. Barry was examining chaplain to the Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1869 to 1872, and Boyle Lecturer from 1876 to 1878. He was created a D.C.L. of Oxford in 1870, and appointed Canon-Residentiary of Worcester Cathedral in 1871, Honorary Chaplain in Ordinary to the Queen in 1879, and Canon of Westminster in 1881. Dr. Barry is the author of many published sermons, notes on Scripture, and treatises on religious subjects, and of a biographical memoir of his father'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883.
