Légende
Cromwell at Bootham Bar by Ernest Crofts; Pictures from the Exhibition of the Institute of Painters in Oil Colours, 1883. Engraving of a painting. 'The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours may be understood as having a dual existence in their stately new quarters in Piccadilly. Though it has in the winter to drop its distinction of "Royal" - which was conferred on the Institute as a water-colour society only - it passes, as some may think, from the chrysalis state to full maturity in the exhibition of oil paintings, which in future at this season will replace the spring displays of drawings in water colours. The show which opens to-day (Saturday) is at all events of excellent character; and although we are unable to review the collection in detail this week, we borrow from the Illustrated Catalogue some examples of its quality...Mr. Crofts has selected a striking, suggestive incident in "Cromwell at Bootham Bar".'
