View of the '...Synagogue and College for old Rabbis [opened in 1833], and the tomb of Lady Montefiore, who died in September, 1862. This mausoleum stands on the top of a high cliff overlooking the sea, and a lamp is kept ever burning within it'. The Montefiore Synagogue is the private Orthodox Jewish synagogue and adjacent mausoleum of the late Sir Moses Montefiore. Judith Lady Montefiore College is a Jewish theological seminary founded in 1869 by Sir Moses in memory of his late wife, Judith, Lady Montefiore (1784-1862), who was a British linguist, musician, travel writer, and philanthropist.
