The Dairy Show at the Agricultural Hall, Islington, 1883. 'Judging cheese; milking competition; the Lord Mayor & Lady Mayoress visit the show; churning; calves; kids; quite the cheese; cheese-making; not for competition; "Real Devonshire hog puddin' - try a bit Sir"...The Society aims to encourage the rearing of stock for the purposes of the dairy, and a larger and more general production of butter, cheese, and eggs...and the improvement of the machinery and appliances used by the dairyman...Each class was...thoroughly well represented, some of the best-known cattle breeders and dairymen being among the exhibitors...There was a large number of entries in the goat classes...In the Cheddar class many well-known makers from the Glastonbury and Wells districts were represented. Next in importance comes the butter department, in which the entries are also numerous...prizes were offered for butter-making, and lectures were to be given on the same subject. Our etches of the scenes in the competition of milking, churning, and cheese-making, the visit of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, and the appearance of the calves and kids, who can hardly be expected to approve of dairy business, will be found sufficiently amusing'.
