Professor Cayley, President of the British Association, 1883. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. Barraud of 'the Sadlerian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University...This eminent mathematician...was born at Richmond, Surrey, in 1821, and was educated at King's College, London, and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1842, winning the double mathematical honour of Senior Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman...When the Sadlerian Professorship was established, in 1863, Mr. Cayley was elected to be the first holder of this Chair; and it was in 1875, by the provisions of a College Statute enabling a Professor or Public Lecturer of the University to be chosen for a College Fellowship, that he became a Fellow of Trinity. Professor Cayley received the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws from the University of Oxford in 1864, and next year that of Doctor of Laws from the University of Dublin: in 1875 the University of Leyden conferred upon him, most appropriately, that of Doctor of Mathematics and Physics. He is also a Corresponding Member of the Institute of France for the Section of Astronomy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, of the Royal Astronomical Society, and of several other scientific bodies'.
