Légende

Ranavalona III., the new Queen of Madagascar, 1883. Engraving from a photograph by Abraham Kingdom. Rasendranoro, who has been elected Queen of Madagascar, is a niece of the late Queen Ranavalona II. She now takes the name and title of Ranavalona III. She is about twenty-three years of age, and was married to Andrianaly, a young nobleman...The marriage proved to be a very unhappy one; indeed, Andrianaly is said to have struck his Royal wife. For this and other supposed offences, he was banished to the fever district...in the Betsileo province...He is not...[now] regarded as the husband of the new Queen. Ranavalona III. Is a lady possessed of pleasing manners and a dignified bearing...The Government of Madagascar may be termed "elective-monarchical", and this form has been developed as the result of experience'.
