Lower St. George's Street, Cape Town, South Africa, c1900? 'A few years ago the view of the sea at the lower end of St. George's Street, was obstructed by several very unsightly buildings. In 1895 the Town Council determined to improve this part of the city, and succeeded, by arbitration, in having these old rookeries removed, and rearranged the line of the street so that there was a clear opening to the Bay. One of two merchants owing property in the locality, with commendable enterprise, then erected a row of handsome buildings, so that now it is one of the best thoroughfares of Cape Town'.
