'Cross Only At The Lights', World War II poster, c1939-c1945. Figure wearing a white armband for visibility. Blackout was the practice of collectively minimizing outdoor light at night, to prevent crews of enemy aircraft from being able to identify their targets by sight. The poster encourages civilians to cross at traffic lights, as vehicle headlights were fitted with covers to deflect their beams downwards, meaning crossing the road could be dangerous for pedestrians.
