Enthroned Madonna and Child, 2nd half of 15th century. Next to Mary with the Child, St. John the Baptist often appeared in Renaissance paintings as the one who announced the coming of the Savior. This element was especially popular in Florentine art, as St. John the Baptist was the patron saint of the city and the cathedral.
