City of London College: the Prince and Princess of Wales in the Lecture-Hall at the Opening, 1883. 'The great hall, in which the ceremony took place on Saturday, was tastefully decorated with hangings of crimson cloth, and various City banners were suspended round the walls and gallery. The platform or dais was banked round with roses, maidenhair ferns, and choice plants...A selection of vocal music was sung by members of the Guildhall School of Music, under the direction of Mr. Weist Hill...The Rev. Prebendary Whittington, Principal of the College, read an address to the Prince of Wales, and his Royal Highness made a suitable reply, expressing his deep interest in its object, and referring to the fact that his father, the late Prince Consort, was its first patron...The City of London College was established, thirty-five years ago, by the efforts of the Rev. Prebendary Mackenzie and other gentlemen interested in the well-being of the many thousands of young men engaged in offices and houses of business in the City'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883.
