Arthur, succeeded in due legal course to the Presidency of the United States...General Arthur...was lately at the head of one of the best-known legal firms in New York, that of Arthur, Philips, Knevals, and Ransom. His personal character, according to the testimony of political opponents, is without reproach. He was left a widower two years ago, but has a married sister to do the honours of the White House'.
