Normanton Park, Rutlandshire - view from South-East, 1881. '...Lord Aveland's principal seat in Rutland... . It is very pleasantly and picturesquely placed on the slope of a richly-timbered park, five hundred acres in extent, and well stocked with deer. It is a fine mansion of the Ionic order, rebuilt on the site of the earlier house at the close of the past century, and consists of a central elevation of three storeys, with two wings of the same height, and a semicircular sweep of one-storeyed rooms on either side, with ornamental blocks of building for stables and other purposes...The whole of the exterior of the mansion is remarkable for the beauty of the stonework and carving, and important additions and improvements have been made by the present noble owner...At the foot of the hill, on the slope of which the mansion is built, the road is carried by a bridge over a stream, which has been artificially widened into a small lake, with an island in the midst for the water-fowl. The stream is a tributary of Rutland's river, the Gwash, or Wash...On the further side of this lake, the park is extended to the wooded heights towards Whitwell and Exton'.
