'At the opening of the Session of Parliament, on Thursday last, the Address of the House of Commons, in reply to the Queen's Speech, was...seconded by Mr. John Slagg...Mr. Slagg, who was born in 1841, is eldest son of the late Mr. John Slagg, cotton manufacturer and merchant, of Manchester, who was a leading member of the Council of the Anti-Corn-Law League, and an intimate friend of Mr. Cobden. Mr. Slagg carries on his father's business, and is President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce...He was returned M.P. for Manchester at the general Election of last April, polling the greatest number of votes ever recorded in any constituency of the United Kingdom'.
