George Stephenson Centenary Festival: procession of benefit societies passing the Market-Hall, Chesterfield, 1881. 'At Chesterfield, where George Stephenson resided in the latter part of his life, the centenary of his birth was commemorated'. The hall was constructed in 1857 by the Chesterfield Market Company which was founded by Frederick Swanwick. Illustration published in a special supplement to celebrate the centenary of the birth of British civil engineer and mechanical engineer George Stephenson (1781-1848).
