Normanton Park, Rutlandshire - view from North-West, 1881. '...Lord Aveland's principal seat in Rutland...It is very pleasantly and picturesquely placed on the slope of a richly-timbered park, five hundred acres in extent, and well stocked with deer...The gardens and grounds are tastefully laid out, from designs by Repton... Below the mansion, and on the slope of the hill, is the ancient Church of St. Matthew, consisting of a nave and chancel, with a modern portico, tower, and small spire, of the Ionic order, with richly carved Corinthian columns, erected, at a great expense, in the year 1826, when the older part of the church was renovated; further improvements being carried out in 1874'. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
