Troops for South Africa: the Eve of Departure, 1881. The British Army on their way to fight in the First Boer War. 'The despatch of troops from Portsmouth and Woolwich to South Africa has been continued with great activity; three transports left the Thames on Tuesday. We give an Illustration of the scene at the mess-table of a Highland regiment, "on the Eve of Departure".' From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
