Rev. Dr. E. H. Plumptre, new Dean of Wells, 1881. 'The Deanery of Wells, which was rendered vacant by the death of the Very Rev. A. S. Johnson, M.A., is to be filled by the Rev. Edward Hayes Plumptre, D.D., Prebendary of Portpool, in St. Paul's Cathedral, Professor of Exegesis of the New Testament in King's College, London, and Vicar of Bickley, Kent. Professor Plumptre was educated at University College, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. (double first class) in 1844 and M.A. in 1847. He was Fellow of Brasenose College from 1844 to 1847. From 1851 to 1858 he was assistant teacher at Lincoln's Inn Chapel. He has been select preacher before the University of Oxford on three several occasions; for nearly twenty years he was Dean of Queen's College, Oxford; and he has held numerous other appointments. His writings also have been very numerous, and he was from 1869 to 1874 a member of the Old Testament Company for the revision of the Authorised Version'. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
