Departure of a Cunard steamer from Liverpool: going on board the tender, 1881. 'The cabs and other vehicles, with anxious people inside, and with piles of luggage on the roof, continually drive up to the entrance of the landing-stage on the Mersey quay, where passengers have presently to go aboard the tender, by which they are soon conveyed to the noble Cunard steam-ship lying in the middle of the river. They are received at their coming on board the ship by one of her courteous and attentive officers, and arc directed to their respective berths, readily obtaining whatever assistance they need. It is, of course, a troublesome little affair, but of great importance to their comfort during the next ten days, to get their portmanteaux, or travelling-bags, and other repertories of needful personal gear so arranged as to be easily accessible for daily or hourly convenience'.
