A cruise of naval volunteers: trip to Norway, 1881. 'Crossing the North Sea under storm canvas; Christiania; The Cook's Mate at work; A Cariole Party; Hands to bathe; A Cariole; The Dinner Hour...The lamented death, on the 13th January, of Mr. Henry Denison Pender...gives a mournful interest to the photographs that have supplied our Illustrations of this pleasant maritime trip. He was a skilful amateur photographer, as well as an advanced student of science, a naturalist, and an accomplished musician and composer...in July last year, [he] accompanied [a] yachting cruise to Denmark, Norway, and the Baltic...Their yacht was the Hornet, a topsail schooner...They reached Copenhagen on July 10...then from Denmark they passed to Christiania; on July 25 they landed in Norway, and enjoyed a cariole trip of two days across the country, to the Falls of Honefös...Our Illustrations...represent the Hornet under storm sail, crossing the North Sea; a bathing party in the Baltic; the crew resting at the dinner-hour; the cook's mate set to clean the lower deck; and the cariole travelling in Norway incidents which give some idea of the summer holiday experiences of these Royal Naval Volunteers'.
