Légende
The late M. Eugène Verboeckhoven, Belgian animal painter, 1881. 'The eminent Belgian artist, Eugène Verboeckhoven, died at Brussels on the 19th February, at the age of eighty-two. He was the son of a sculptor, Bartholomew Verboeckhoven, and studied that branch of art in early life. His pictures have long been celebrated throughout Europe. Among those best known are "Le Convoi des Chevaux Attaqué par les Loups," "L'Etalon Arabe," "Souvenir d'Ecosse," "Campagne de Rome," and "Montons Surpris par l'Orage," in the Musée Royale of Brussels. His studio, which contained hundreds of oil-paintings and an immense number of drawings, was a wonderful display of talent and diligence, and was constantly visited by admiring connoisseurs. He was elected honorary member of the Russian and Austrian and other foreign Academies of Art, and was graced with several orders of knighthood. In his own country, M. Verboeckhoven was highly esteemed, not only as a great artist, but as a patriotic citizen, having taken a leading part in the Revolution of 1830, which won independence for the kingdom of Belgium. His funeral was attended with military honours and with the presence of a large number of distinguished persons'. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
