Montearagón Castle, Quicena, Aragón, Spain, 11th, century (2008). General view of the fortress, reinforced c1090 by Sancho I Ramírez (1043-1094) to help with the siege of the Muslim stronghold of Wasqah (Huesca). Sancho met his death here from a stray arrow as he was reconnoitring the city's walls. The city was conquered in 1096 by Peter I of Aragon, after defeating the relief forces in the Battle of Alcoraz. After the taking of the city, the castle was converted into a monastery. It was destroyed by fire in the 19th century.
