Tomb of King Pere III of Aragon, Monastery of Santes Creus, Aiguamúrcia, province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, 2008. Polychromed tomb of Pere III of Aragon, the Great (c1240-1285). The sarcophagus, begun by the master Bartomeu around 1296, rests over a Roman red porphyry bathtub and under a Gothic pavilion. Peter (in Aragonese, Pero; in Catalan, Pere; in Italian, Pietro), King of Valencia (as Peter I), and Count of Barcelona (as Peter II) ruled from 1276 to his death. At the invitation of some rebels, he conquered the Kingdom of Sicily and became King of Sicily (as Peter I) in 1282.
