Salvation Islands, French Guiana, 1898. From left to right: Devil's Island, Royal Island and Saint-Joseph Island. The former French captain Alfred Dreyfus served his sentence between 1895 and 1899 in the penal colony on Devil's Island. The Salvation Islands were so called because missionaries went there to escape plague on the mainland. From "La Ilustración Española y Americana", 1898.
