Both countries planned to build lines of communication so that their colonial possessions would be uninterruptedly linked. Both powers sent military expeditions to defend their interests, which coincided at Fashoda. The French expedition, outnumbered, were forced to retreat, allowing British control of the Sudan region. The fleet consisted of five steamers, two of which were gunboats, three Sudanese battalions, one hundred Scottish troops and Maxim artillery system. From "La Ilustración Española y Americana", 1898.
