Head of the colossal statue "Liberty Illuminating the World", Paris Exposition, 1878. The head, presented at the Champ de Mars in Paris, was to serve as a lighthouse in New York Harbour. The sculpture, a gift to the United States from the people of France, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. From "La Ilustración Española y Americana", 1878.
