Rostral Column next to the River Neva, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1839. French architect Jean-François Thomas de Thomon designed two rostral columns constructed of brick coated with stucco and decorated with bronze anchors and four pairs of bronze ship prows (rostra). They were originally intended to serve as beacons and were topped by a brazier lit by oil. From "History of Russia" by Jean Marie Chopin (1796-1870), "Panorama Universal", Spanish edition, 1839.
