Portrait of Martin Luther (1483-1586), 16th century. Additional Info: Martin Luther (1483-1586)-an Augustinian monk, priest, writer and translator of the Bible into German-was one of the leaders of the Reformation. In 1517, he proclaimed his famous 95 theses in Wittenberg. For having burned the papal bull in which Pope Leo X had condemned a part of his theses, Luther was excommunicated and banished from Wittenberg in 1521. In 1524, he discarded the habit and married. The portrait shows the leader of the Reformation in half-length. He is dressed in black and holds, in front of him, an open book, presenting a fragment of the Gospel of St John in the German language. Below there is a Latin text containing a short biography of Luther.
