Portrait of Franciszek Matejko, Artist's Father, 1877. Additional Info: It is a posthumous portrait of Franciszek Matejko (1793-1860), the father of Jan Matejko. He came from Bohemia and settled in Kraków in 1816 and was a piano teacher. He married Joanna Karolina Rossberg (Jan Matejko's mother), the daughter of a saddler-the house owner at 41 Florianska Street in Krakow. The artist painted the image of his father, based on his photograph, seventeen years after his death. The portrait depicts a grey, slightly balding man in bust form, facing right. The portrayed individual is dressed in a dark frock coat with a protruding white stock tie. The background is dark and homogeneous.
