Légende

Portrait of Stanislaw Piotr Telefus (d. 1747), Ensign of Podolia, 2nd half of 18th century. Additional Info: A portrait of Piotr Telefus of Podolia, who during his lifetime held various offices in Letychiv and Kamianets-Podilskyi, is a typical example of a votive image, whose function is to commemorate the deceased person in the act of eternal prayer. Telefus has his hands folded and stands facing the crucifix, placed on a platform, a book is open before him. The remnants of the inscription on its pages indicate it is a psalter, as two Latin verses of penitential psalms can be read "Look upon mine affliction and my pain, and forgive all my sins" (Psalm 25: 18) and "Keep back your servant also from the insolent, do not let them have dominion over me" (Psalm 19: 13). The sabre carried by Telefus, which, because of the strictly religious meaning of the portrait and its devotional accessories, may surprise, is not just a weapon here but should be interpreted primarily as an attribute of the noble class to which Telefus belonged.
