Portrait of Mikolaj Sieniawski (1489-1569), Grand Hetman of Lithuania, 1749-1756. Additional Info: On the portrait, the hetman is wearing the Polish national outfit, but his head is shaved in a Cossack manner, with only one lock of hair falling on the forehead, called oseledets (Ruthenian). Sieniawsk operated mainly in the south-eastern borderlands, involved in their defence. He was born in 1489. In 1531 he received the office of the Field Crown Guardian. In the same year, he fought in the victorious Battle of Obertyn, which consolidated Polish power over Pokuttya. He was the castellan of Belz and from 1542 the voivode of Belz. Then, in 1553, he became the voivode of the Ruthenian Voivodship. At the same time, he also maintained sovereignty over the army, from 1539 he was a field hetman, and finally, from 1561, the Grand Crown Hetman. He died in 1569.
