Portrait of Leo I of Galicia (ca.1228-ca.1301), Prince of Galicia-Volhynia. King of Ruthenia, Prince of Belz (1245-1264), Przemysl, Galicia (1264-1269), and Kiev (1271-1301). Created in the 18th Century. Additional Info: The city of Lviv was founded by King Daniel I of Galicia, who named it to honour his son Lev. When Lev took over the power after his father, he moved the capital of his country to Lviv in 1272 (the former capital was Chelm). For this reason, the memory of this prince was especially venerated in Lviv, and the expression of this veneration is this imaginary portrait made in the 18th century, nearly five hundred years after his death. The image depicts a Lev in full plate armour, with a mace and a sabre. He wears a red coat lined with ermine fur, with a precious golden chain hanging from the shoulders, the head is decorated with a princely calpack. In the background, we can see the city panorama treated quite synthetically, but the characteristic points of the panorama of the old Lviv are visible the castle, the Church of St Onuphrius, the tower of the Wallachian Church.
