Veri Amator, 1867. 'Mr Peaceful reprehending his neighbour Farmer Hasty, "Write injuries in the Dust." Dispel all malice from thy heart, Contention don't be brewing; The time's so short before we part It is not worth thy doing. Now age thy head has silver'd oer, Ere long to Time thou'lt bow. For soon the clay cold hand of death Will settle on thy brow. Go softly, do! Good will pursue, Consider - man's a brother. Forgiveness too's a sacred due We owe to one another. A bar to happiness is strife With reason cooly ponder. If truth is vanquish'd in this life, 'Twill rise triumphant yonder. What's life, then say? Why brittle clay Just like that Pitcher there, Time's foot will fall and crush us all; We are but earthen ware. Peace to thy bosom - let it reign, And conscience cheer thy hours. Thy Pitcher then will rise again With everlasting Flowers. S. Jenner, nephew and representative of late Dr. Jenner D.V. 1867'. Lettering: handwritten in ink on recto, six quatrains below the picture; written in pencil on verso. A farmer, quick to take offence, and his neighbour trying to pacify him; a woman and a dog next to them. The verses recommend peaceful settlement of disputes.
