General Sir R. Dacres, R.A., G.C.B., the new Constable of the Tower of London, 1881. 'General Sir Richard James Dacres...entered the Royal Artillery in 1817. In the Crimean War of 1854 and 1855, he served with the rank of Major-General, and took part in the battles of the Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman,...as well as in the whole of the siege operations before Sebastopol, succeeding to the command of the Royal Artillery in that siege...General Dacres had a horse shot under him in the battle of Inkerman. He also commanded the Royal Artillery..., in the repulse of the Russians after the failure of the Light Cavalry charge at Balaclava. For these services, in 1855, he was made a K.C.B., and obtained the local rank of Lieutenant-General, besides receiving the Crimean medal with four clasps, the 2nd Class Order of the Medjidieh, and the Turkish Medal, and was nominated a Commander of the French Legion of Honour, and of the Sardinian Military Order of Savoy. Sir Richard Dacres was Commandant of the garrison at Woolwich from May, 1859, to 1865...He became full General in February, 1868, and retired from active service in 1877'.
