Sketches of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment, 1881. Scenes of British Army life: [page of]...character sketches, groups and single figures, designed by the amateur artist to represent some familiar features of regimental life, which may prove amusing to the reader...The gallant Sixty-sixth...has lately returned from a term of Indian service, the last notable event of which took place in the battle of Maiwand, or Khushk-i-Nakhud, on July 27 of last year...against the Afghan army of Ayoub Khan...The 66th is now at Parkhurst Barracks, Isle of Wight...1. Old Accoutrements [officers' swords and instruments of the band] stored up at Portsmouth; 2. Bobby, the [regimental pet] Dog of Maiwand...this faithful animal...was severely wounded in action. He was taken prisoner, and was kept in Ayoub Khan's camp from that day till the defeat of the Afghans at Candahar; 3. A Lieutenant; 4. a little card-playing diversion for "leisure hours"; 5. A Captain; 6. Adjutant and Sergeant-Major; Private; 8. Bugler; 9. Drummer-Boy; 10. Lance-Corporal; 11. A Favourite (the Paymaster); 12. a chorus of vocal music, with pianoforte accompaniment, over pots and pipes at the canteen'. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
