'We sincerely rejoice to learn, by the latest telegram from Washington...that the esteemed President of the United States is in the way of being restored, steadily and rapidly, through an approaching moderate period of convalescence, to entire health...Our front-page Illustration, which represents President Garfield...attended by the surgeons and physician and a female member of his family, will remind many readers at a distance from that scene of anxious watching, and of considerable bodily suffering, that he has passed through a severe ordeal, and that there has been a narrow escape from death...' On July 2, 1881, Charles J. Guiteau shot Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington. The wound was not immediately fatal, but an infection caused by his doctors' unsanitary methods in treating the wound killed Garfield on September 19. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
