Sir James Paget, Bart., F.R.S., President of the International Medical Congress, 1881. 'This eminent surgeon...has, since July, 1875, been President of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. He was born at Great Yarmouth, in January, 1814, the son of a merchant, the late Mr. Samuel Paget, of that town. He studied at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1836, and an honorary Fellow in 1843. He held the appointments of Lecturer on Physiology and Surgeon to St. Bartholomew's, and that of Professor of Surgery and Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons. He is author of several important works on physiology and surgery, of "Lectures on Surgical Pathology," published in 1853, in 1863, and in 1868; of a "Pathological Catalogue of the Museum of the College of Surgeons," and of numerous Reports and Treatises contributed to the discussions of different scientific societies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of the Senate of the University of London, and one of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons; Consulting Surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Sergeant-Surgeon to the Queen, and Surgeon to the Prince of Wales'.
