Sketches of South African travel: the lion and dead elephant, 1874. 'Our Artist in South Africa, Mr. Thomas Baines, F.G.S., sends us a sketch of an incident that took place in the journey of his party to the newly discovered gold-fields. It was the common practice of the officers of the party to walk on some distance ahead of the waggons, "prospecting for gold," as it is called, on each side of the road. On one of these occasions, Mr. Nelson, the indefatigable mineralogist, was in advance of the rest, when he met with the adventure so well illustrated by Mr. Baines. Happily, the lion, having a very substantial meal before him, contented himself with a warning growl and left the worthy mineralogist to pursue his way in peace. The lion of South Africa, however, is not the formidable beast described by travellers as infesting the jungles on the frontier of Algeria'. From "Illustrated London News", 1874.
