The late Sir W. Bodkin, Assistant Judge of the Middlesex Sessions, 1874. Engraving from a photograph by John Watkins. 'The death of this gentleman, who had retired very lately from the office of Assistant Judge of the Middlesex Quarter Sessions, has been mentioned in our Journal...The late Judge was...was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn in 1826...At the general election in 1841 he was returned to Parliament, in the Conservative interest...He was one of the earliest members of the Society of Arts, of which he was a vice-president. He wrote a pamphlet, published in 1821, on subjects connected with the administration of the poor-law system. He was a Bencher of Gray's Inn and a deputy-lieutenant of Middlesex, and received the honour of knighthood in 1867, some years after taking his seat upon the judicial bench at the Middlesex Sessions House. It will be remembered that Sir William, who suffered from a painful malady, resigned his office some weeks ago...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1874.
