'Mr. Charles Mark Palmer, of Saltburn, Yorkshire...is Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Durham Engineer Volunteers, a magistrate for the North Riding of Yorkshire and for the county of Durham, and extensively engaged in business as a coalowner, shipbuilder, and iron-master. We have now and then had occasion to speak of the great iron-making and ship and engine building establishment of Messrs. Palmer and Co...Mr. Palmer, who now enters Parliament, has been twice married; first, in 1846, to Jane, daughter of Mr. E. Robson, of Newcastle ; and, secondly, in 1867, to Augusta Mary, daughter of Mr. Alfred Lambert, of Paris. The return of Mr. Palmer involves the gain of a seat to the Liberal party in North Durham'.
